The Story Behind one of Ridgewood, NJ's Iconic Landmarks

The now Tarvin Realtors office building was originally opened on September 15th, 1924. Owned by John B. Humma and designed by Albert M. Bedell, the iconic building served as both a place of business and a residence for Humma. In an article published in The Ridgewood News on September 21, 1924, the building is described as "a bit of old Italy, transplanted to Ridgewood". Features including "rough stucco", an "arched doorway of carved Indiana limestone, and its narrow balcony which might have been Juliet's own", all helped contribute to this description. On the first floor, Humma conducted his business of decorating. Upon the buildings opening, Humma dedicated the open space on the first floor to opening an art shop. The first floor even featured a private art studio where Humma would often find himself. On the second floor were two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchenette, and a bathroom. The interior is described as having decorations of "Italian, French, American Colonial, Chinese, and Kurdish" origin. The building would remain this way until the early 1940s when it was sold and converted to the County Garden Tea Room.

Once converted into the County Garden Tea Room, the building no longer served as a residence. The famous County Garden Tea room was a place where residents of Ridgewood, NJ and the surrounding could come to relax and enjoy themselves.

The two above pictures depict the interior of the County Garden Tea Room. Though no longer owned by Humma, much of the interior remained unchanged, including the apple-green woodwork. The building would remain this way until the 1950s when it was converted into a real estate office building. For roughly the past 60 years, the building has served as a real estate office, but has been occupied by Tarvin Realtors since May 1st, 1988. Over time, the ivy-covered, mediterranean style building has become a true landmark of not only Ridgewood, NJ but also of Bergen County.
