mahwah, njMore than half of the space within the city limits of Mahwah is a wild greenbelt, just waiting to be explored. The township is best known for its outstanding collection of state parks and sporting facilities; this combination truly makes this community a mecca for sports and recreation of all kinds. Without a real town center to speak of, the town does have a great agglomeration of large retail spaces on your way into town along route 17.

But as the home of the A&P Tennis Classic, a warmup to the US Open, each year for the past 25 and also containing a large number of parks and fields, outdoor swimming pools and golf courses, Mahwah is really all about sport and fun, at its very core. The name of the community itself comes from the Lenipe Indians word, mawewi meaning "Meeting Place"; an apt name for a place renowned for bringing people together.

A Grand Number of State Parks

Without a doubt, the most notable park within the borders of Mahwah is Campgaw Mountain Reservation. At 1351 acres, its limits overflow outside of Mahwah but it still provides residents with fantastic fishing and camping, with some absolutely beautiful nature hikes. In the winter, there is a small ski hill, featuring 2 lifts providing endless winter fun. There is also the Ramapo Valley County Reservation taking up an outstanding 3000 plus acres. This park holds within its boundaries the MacMillan Reservoir and Scarlet Oak Pond. An extensive network of trails makes its way throughout this park, even connecting to the system of trails to be found within the neighboring state forest of the same name.

Toward the center of Mahwah is Darlington Park. Found within the park is a system of three lakes. The two outermost lakes prominently feature pristine sandy beaches that have become popular for both residents of this community and the surrounding area. The park's three lakes offer a little something for everyone with two lakes reserved for swimmers and the third for fishing, plus plenty of open space in between, perfect for that family barbeque.

More than Just Golf

The Appleridge Golf Course straddles the boundary between Mahwah and neighboring community of Upper Saddle River. The Darlington Golf Course, just off Interstate 257 in the southern part of town, combined with Appleridge make Mahwah a true Golfer's destination. But it's not all about golf, Mahwah offers residents the chance to play a number of other sports as well such as Baseball and Tennis with the facilities at Finch Park and the Ramapo College of New Jersey, right in the center of town.

Mahwah is a major center for Tennis in the state of New Jersey. And of course, the township is the home of the annual A&P classic, a warmup to the US Open and always a big draw for residents of Mahwah, and the surrounding areas.

Located right along the northern border of New Jersey, this small community is just an hour's drive from either the city of New Jersey or New York and can serve as the ideal escape from those urban jungles.
