Somerville Elementary School is a K-5 public school in Ridgewood with approximately 500 students. The district mostly includes the area west of Route 17, south of Fairway Road, north of Laurel Road, and east of Maple Avenue.
The primary mission of Somerville Elementary is to help children develop the skills they need to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers in an increasingly complex world. While the academic program is challenging, students are cared for within a supportive environment that encourages respect, integrity and diversity. The Somerville Elementary School community embraces the ideology that the “Ideal school should be a cross between Harvard and Disneyland: educational excellence and the happiest place on earth.”
Aside from its standing as one of the top-rated elementary schools in all of New Jersey, Somerville is also known for the wide variety of student clubs. Participating in a club or extra-curricular activity is a great way for students to discover new interests and develop their skills. Students interested in extending their spelling and vocabulary knowledge can join the Spelling Bee Club, while those wishing to apply their math skills can join the Continental Math League. Budding artists can take part in the weekly Sketchbook Club, and music and theatre enthusiasts have a variety of clubs to choose from, such as Broadway Bound, Handchime Choir and many others. Students looking for something a bit more physically active can spend time at the Running Club, Circus Club and Yoga Club. Other clubs include Quiz Bowl, Television Club, iCode2, Recycling Club and many more. There’s truly an extra-curricular for everyone!
